Snoring is no joke: Thousands of Canadians have sleep apnea and don’t know it. While snoring may be considered a source of jokes and laughter for the person who does snore, for their bed partner, it is not a humorous matter. The disrupted sleep of the non-snoring partner is very frustrating with disturbed sleep and can lead to marital discord. However for the person who is snoring, they may have a very serious life-threatening condition known as Sleep Apnea.
Sleep apnea is a breathing disorder that causes a person to stop breathing repeatedly while they sleep. These periods of non-breathing can last from 20 seconds up to 2 minutes and can happen many times per hour. The most common type of sleep apnea is called Obstructive Sleep Apnea, when the upper airway in the throat becomes blocked while asleep. We spend 1/3 of our life sleeping, and good sleep is crucial for our health and well-being. We simply cannot live without sleep. Without sleep, our whole body cannot function normally throughout the day.
The problems associated with sleep apnea are
- High blood pressure
- Heart Arrhythmia
- Increased risk of strokes and heart attacks
- Daytime sleepiness
- Increased risk of car accidents or work place accidents
- Loss of memory and confusion
While snoring and sleep apnea are medical conditions, there may be a dental solution to both. With a medical consultation and a referral from a medical doctor, we may have a dental solution for your snoring and/or sleep apnea. If you are a candidate we can make an intra oral appliance to help keep your airway open and reduce snoring and sleep apnea.
